“Eulogy for the Damned” was Jamie Dodd’s production and it was mastered by Andy Jackson, the twice Grammy nominated engineer from Pink Floyd. The Music Record Shop album was received inLondon at the Animal Farm Studio. When it comes to metal, Orange Goblin has had been one of the major players for the last more than 16 years. With such a magnificent profile, when the “goblins” decided to return to the studio after 5 years, it was certain that they were going to create something that would not be less than magnificent. In “Eulogy for the Damned”, the band continues with its gracious business of being themselves.
You may find the Music Record Shop album to be the regular drink-spilling, blues-licking and foot-thumping compilation, but it is still “great.” Joe Hoare sends the riffs flying off his fingers more beautifully, the kit grooves of Chris Turner chug more gracefully, Ben Ward’s vocals still sound as if he had windows for breakfast and everything simply rocks more rocknigly.
There is a wobbly vibe throughout the album. It’s tight and really makes you realize how important it is for heavy metal to take itself overly but yet less gravely. For example, when you hear Ward spitting out “The ultimate fall of mankind” in the track “Red Tide Rising,” there is a hearty spirit of an actor who is classical and trained as if in the Shakespearean era, while at the same time seeming to chew the lines in a second-grade movie.
Eventually, “Eulogy for the Damned” wouldn’t feel to be the right Orange Goblin work if there were no cosmic blues tracks. You would certainly find the coming together of “Sabbath” and “Zeppplin” effect in the songs “The Bishops Wolf” and “Death of Aquarius” while the arena close to the sounds of “Spiritual Beggars” and “Kyuss” are also covered on Music Record Shop.
